What an amazing tribute to female athletes! Wendy Fox, a graphic designer and illustrator from Australia, has struck gold with her latest project. Her project, Women’s Gold Medalists, is gaining a lot of recognition because of its unique approach in showcasing women’s strength.
With the use of infographics, Wendy captures the athleticism and physical diversity of female athletes while using a very unique approach. She is primarily focusing on gold medalist athletes. Her infographics show each female athlete’s name, sport, country of origin and physical attributes such as height and weight.
She initially got interested in female athleticism back in 2012 and was surprised to discover how highly competitive females are, yet how little media coverage they got compared to their male counterparts. She discovered that female athletes competed in 40% of all sports and were on average getting between 4-7% of media coverage compared to males which were getting most of the coverage. This drove Wendy to come up with a creative solution in which these amazing athletes can be showcased and garner the attention that they deserve.
Her initial infographic was released in 2014, as a part of her London Olympics project. Though it received recognition from HOW’s, athletes, feminists and sports journalists alike, Fox knew that the project would have had a greater reach had it been released at the time of the Olympics.
This time, she wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. The project has been released with the Rio Olympics and is running right now. The goal for this year’s Olympics is to provide quality media exposure for the Rio Olympics female Gold Medalists. This will be done through the use of posters, books, art prints, personalized limited edition prints and other creative means.
