Due to the explosion and expansion of IoT (internet of things), wearable technology (aka wearables) has greatly inclined throughout 2015 and includes a variety of wearable items (mostly in the form of accessories and apparel). Wearable tech is best described as a connected device (that uses sensors, web connection, Bluetooth and/or wireless) and assists with achieving goals by monitoring something specific or notifying the wearer of various alerts.

There are many types of wearable tech but in most cases items are worn around the wrist, clipped to body or wrapped around the neck.

Wearables are good at measuring us (as they are able to record heart rates and movements for example).

Wearable tech may be used as a:

  • a navigation tool
  • a media device
  • a fitness tracker

or possibly to make a fashion statement or to gauge alertness and/or energy levels. Wearable tech is beneficial and enjoyed for both personal and business uses.

Wearables are able to exchange data with other connected devices which use practical functions and features and do not require human intervention. In healthcare, wearables may act as activity trackers which are embedded into electronics. Wearable tech has helped healthcare by being able to monitor and protect and provide information related to an individual's health status or trends.

Fashion wearables are able to react to sounds and change colour (interactive shirts) or answer calls and control music (Bluetooth gloves).
