DuoSkin Wearables

Can you imagine controlling your smartphone by swiping your skin? Treating your skin like a touch screen?! Decorating your body as a device?!

Wearable tech has made a massive change. Leaders from MIT Media Lab and Microsoft have worked together in order to develop a wearable tattoo that allows individuals to control their phones from a 'gold leaf tattoo' placed on their body. Those who decide to wear a Duoskin tattoo are able to control a devices actions, among other things - by applying pressure to, or swiping their skin tattoo.

These tattoos known as 'DuoSkin' will be presented at wearable tech conferences this fall. These smart tattoos are temporary (last about a day) and allow individuals use their skin as an interface for their mobile device and / or computer.

The tattoos are designed to be body art resembling temporary tattoos and are metallic and are both functional, and fashionable.

How Wearable Tattoos Work

These functional devices attach to ones skin via gold metal leaf which allows for wireless communication to the device it's synced to work with. Gold and copper are great sources of conductors for electricity, as well as heat so it makes perfect sense that gold leaf is used as the conductor in this tattoo in order to transmit signals to and from your device.

A 'skin - circuit' is designed in a special software program first, followed by the fabrication of the circuit, then the actual application of the tattoo to ones skin.

Tasks of the Tech Tattoo:

  • input information
  • switch songs
  • record body temperature
  • transmit data
  • control device
  • communicate wirelessly
  • display information
  • store information
  • enhance personal style
